Progression is an important aspect of programme design. Monitoring and testing allows the individual or athlete to be evaluated throughout the training process. Relevant short or long term decisions can then be made regarding the focus of the training and its effectiveness on the individual or team.

The process of monitoring involves the recording of ongoing workloads. For example, the volume and intensity of each resistance training session and the frequency of the sessions throughout the duration of the programme. Daily energy levels, perceived recovery and soreness are also taken into account when evaluating programmes. Testing, if relevant, is usually agreed to be conducted at specific intervals throughout the programme. This may involve a barrage of tests to assess overall condition or specific tests to assess a particular quality. Testing and monitoring data is both taken into account when evaluating programmes and personal development.

This depth of personal training programme design, monitoring and subsequent evaluation is common practice to an experienced strength and conditioning coach but quite possibly unfamiliar if you have only trained by yourself or with a trainer who is unfamiliar with the application of sports science.
